What is it?

The Hype Machine keeps track of what music bloggers write about. We handpick a set of kickass music blogs and then present what they discuss for easy analysis, consumption and discovery. Who are you?

We are an independent company based in Brooklyn, NY. Our focus is on making the most culturally rich music discovery experience on the web.

The firm started as a web product experiment in April of 2005 and continued as a bootstrapped business. That said, we are huge fans of many people in the investor community - they've supported many of the projects we love on the web today.

Why?

We are creating tools that empower independent voices that write about music. We think a select group of passionate people can produce more engaging conversation than a huge social mob, or a rigid hierarchy of editors. We amplify their posts and the audio they choose, to help this vibrant culture spread.

Oh yeah, music runs in our veins. You already figured that out though.

We offer a few ways to explore the music that flows through our site:

• Latest: What's going on right now in the blogosphere. You can also browse the recent posting by genre, just try the links in the sidebar.
• Popular: The most popular artists, searches and blogs on the internet right now.
• Twitter: Interactive music chart of songs being posted on Twitter.
• Spy: Snoop on what other people are listening to on our site.
• Radio Show: A monthly radio show summarizing what's up on music blogs
• Music Blog Directory: The complete list of blogs we track, organized by genre
• Zeitgeist: The best 50 artists, albums and songs of the past year.
• Dashboard: A customizable view of your favorite tracks, artists, blogs and users.

How does it work?

The Hype Machine tracks a variety of MP3 blogs. If a post contains MP3 links, it adds those links to its database and displays them on the front page.

Those tracks are NOT available for download, but you can preview them via the play buttons that are next to each track.

The blog that posted a particular track is identified under every track by name so you can read more about why they posted it. If you enjoyed a track someone posted, stop by and let them know.
