Report: Twitter Bought We Are Hunted, Will Release Music App for iOS

Twitter has acquired music discovery site We Are Hunted, and will use it to launch an official, Twitter-branded music app soon, according to a CNET report.

Apparently, it really was hunted.

We Are Hunted rose to prominence after a 2009 Wired exclusive about a “fantastic new way to find music,” which creates real-time-ish music charts based on what people are talking about. In addition to its website (since redesigned), Hunted Media has a slew of apps: Music Hunter for iPad, Pocket Hipster, Pocket Popstar, Super Sonic, a Spotify version, and We Are Hunted, which runs not only on the web but Google Chrome, Android, and mobile web browsers for iOS.

An insider at the company could not comment to [updated]. Hunted Media’s website is offline except for the following note:

we are hunted twitterAccording to CNET, Twitter will release a Twitter Music app with the following features:

  • It will run on Apple iOS devices (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, iPad Mini).
  • It will pick songs for each user “based on a variety of signals,” including the musicians you follow on Twitter.
  • The songs will play from SoundCloud within the app.
  • It will have a silver play button and a picture of the Twitter bird.
  • It apparently has something to do with tweets like this one from Hunted Media co-founder and CTO Stephen Philips, featuring the #NowPlaying hashtag (again, this is according to CNET, and we have not been able to confirm this stuff, although this is an actual tweet):
  • The app will include tabs for Popular and Emerging, somewhat similar to what you could see on before it blipped offline, with a similar grid interface.
  • It includes artist biographies, iTunes links, and access to all the stuff that artist has on SoundCloud.
  • You will be able to use the app even if you don’t have a Twitter account.
  • Twitter acquired the company at some point between October and December of 2012.
