SXSW Livestreams: Watch the Keynotes Online

Not everyone goes to SXSW.

This year, the predicted count of attendees is “over 27,000,” which means a grand total of 7,070,868,123 humans are not going to enjoy the Interactive, Film, and Music portions of this annual gathering in Austin, Texas.

For the first time in a while, I am among those not going, and it feels weird. We’re going to try to assemble a list going of solid resources for keeping up with what’s going on down there (see also: anonymous gossip).

To get the ball rolling, here’s the schedule of official livestreamed SXSW presentations for day one of SXSW Interactive. You can’t smell the barbecue, but it’s something.

All times are adjusted for the east coast, and this is for day one — all later keynotes are available at sxsw.com/live.

Technology, Imagination & Exponential Thinking

Jason Silva hosts National Geographic Channel’s Brain Games.

He is a guy who lives in Manhattan.

We agree with Jenna Wortham at NYT Bits Blog that this year’s SXSW looks to be more hardware-centric than previous ones (thanks in part to Leap Motion) — gesture control and the internet of things.

Also, on the first day, it’s all guys, from two boroughs in New York. Go, New York guys!

Here are the official descriptions of each presentation, in the words of the presenters:

Opening Remarks from Bre Pettis

“Makerbot co founder and CEO Bre Pettis talks about the present and the future of the ongoing 3D printing revolution. Pettis will also cover one of the lessons he has learned via many years of attendance at SXSW Interactive. Kick off your 2013 SXSW experience with an inspiring talk from this amazing entrepreneur!”

Tales of US Entrepreneurship Beyond Silicon Valley

“Erik Martin (GM, reddit) and Alexis Ohanian (cofounder, reddit) crowdfunded a bus, the Internet 2012 Campaign Tour bus, to collect, document and share stories throughout the American heartland. I’m going to share the stories we heard from Denver, CO to Danville, KY — with pictures — because the open internet is something all Americans cannot do without.”

Technology, Imagination & Exponential Thinking

“Today we live in a world where the exponential progression of technology is increasingly shrinking the lag time between what we can imagine and what we can create. We are rapidly converging to become a civilization of networked minds who will transcend all previous limits. As Erik Davis wrote in Techgnosis, ‘When everything becomes linked with everything else, matter becomes mind.’

“With the coming overlapping revolutions in biotechnology, nanotechnology and artificial intelligence, the instruments to remake the world will be in everybody’s hands.

“The challenge is to get people to think EXPONENTIALLY (rather than linearly) when leveraging future possibilities and addressing grand challenges.

“Another challenge is simply engaging wider audiences to think about these types of ideas.

“In a media marketplace where “attention” is the new limited resource, capturing and managing people’s interest in exponential thinking is precisely what my talk will address.”
