Report: Top 5 iOS Music Apps in U.S., Britain, Australia

ios music servicesOnavo makes apps for iOS and Android that it claims can reduce your smartphone plan’s data usage by up to a factor of five, by compressing data before it transfers to or from your phone. This gives the company plenty of insight as to what those users are doing.

Despite the possible privacy implications (see update below), everybody from the Wall Street Journal to TechCrunch has called Onavo’s apps, the best thing since sliced bread for monitoring your data usage (with Count) and getting more out of your data plan (with Extend).

(Note to music fans: Onavo’s apps do not compress audio streams at this point, so if you’re looking for a way to listen to more music over 3G or LTE than your stingy data plan allows, this is not it.)

Given its insight into what its users are doing, Onavo looked at the top music services on iOS according to their behavior, and found the following top fives across the United States, Britain, and Australia.

The winners are a far-ranging mix of streaming radio, on-demand, and video. The same six entries dominated across all three countries: Pandora, Spotify, Vevo, Rdio, Grooveshark, and Jango.

All of these are native iOS apps, with one notable exception: Grooveshark, which is a mobile web app, having been barred from iTunes (not to mention Google Play, formerly Android.com).
