Father’s Day arrives on Sunday — and what better way to honor all of the fathers, stepfathers, and father figures than with music?
In this Spotify playlist, part of our ongoing series of thematic playlists, we’ve compiled songs from across genres to celebrate all things paternal. Among them: moving tributes from Paul Westerberg (of The Replacements) and Atmosphere; stirring instrumental tributes from Andy McKee and Mogwai; reflections from a father’s point of view from Tom Waits, Loudon Wainwright III, and Slick Rick; a father/daughter duet from Frank and Nancy Sinatra; and other dad-related songs from Super Furry Animals, Pavement, The Beach Boys, and other favorites.
We decided to leave out songs about the “absentee father” despite his perpetual role in songwriting, because there are already enough “Cat’s in the Cradle” references in pop culture.
In all fairness, we did have to admit that dads sometimes make mistakes. However, Johnny Cash’s “A Boy Named Sue” (penned by Shel Silverstein) reminds us that those mistakes often begin with good intentions, and can sometimes be quickly fixed with a good bar fight.
And we just couldn’t resist giving a shout out to the moms too, with Desmond Dekker’s “Honour Your Mother and Father.”
We hope you enjoy the tunes, as you scramble to find the perfect last-minute Father’s Day gift. (You might check out our app database for ideas.)
(Note: Spotify or WordPress appears to be having some issues with the playlist… if it shows up as “undefined,” just click the Play button and it’ll start in Spotify. Sorry for the inconvenience.)
