Traditionalists may scoff at the notion of using something as gauche as Auto-Tuned Karaoke to sing Christmas Carols. For others among us, such is the majesty of time’s grand march into the future, and those other people probably just need to calm down.
If you fall into the latter camp, you might get a kick out of these three Christmas apps for Apple’s iOS platform. Whether you have an iPhone, an iPod Touch, or an iPad, these three kings of artificially-intelligent Christmas music promise to add a new dimension to your holiday festivities.
One of the best things about Christmas is that it convinces people who rarely sing to open up and let ‘er rip. Depending on the person, this can actually be one of the worst things about Christmas too. To the rescue is Christmas Carolizer: Karaoke with Auto-Tune, which lets you sing along with full backing tracks, lyrics, and even an Auto-Tune feature for making you sound good. If what you want is to stand up in front of your kith and kin to wow them with a carol done in the style of celebrities ranging from Frank Sinatra to Justin Bieber, this app is just what Santa ordered.
If you have an iPad and an urge to play your own Christmas carols on a real piano, an electronic MIDI-capable keyboard, or even the iPad keyboard itself, check out Zenph’s Christmas song singles and packages. These apps can teach you how to play everything from Jingle Bells to Feliz Navidad on whatever keyboard you have access to. For use with a MIDI keyboard, which offers the most intensive training, you’ll need an iPad camera connector and a MIDI-to-USB cable or something like that. But regardless of which configuration you choose, these apps can take you a long way towards impressing your friends and family with your Christmas music chops.
If you prefer your artificially-intelligent Christmas music to require, you know, not so much singing and keyboard playing, try Mashtone’s new feature, The Jingler. Import any MP3 on your iOS device into the Mashtone app, apply The Jingler, and listen in amazement as the song plays back with that familiar jingly Christmas sound. You can try this with any MP3, opening up lots of possibilities for “jingling” the favorite songs of whoever you’re spending the holidays with — or, you could try adding jingle to a Christmas song for double the holiday impact.
