So, you’re trying to hammer out “Through the Fire and Flames” on your seven-string Flying V guitar after mastering the five button version on Guitar Hero III, figuring that making the switch from a plastic guitar to a real guitar is a natural progression. Just one problem: The blistering pace of the 290 BPM version from the album is leaving you in the dust.
This is no longer an issue when you train with the Amazing Slow Downer, another of the music practice apps we’ve seen in which simple function belies a powerful functionality. As its name implies, Amazing Slow Downer offers users the ability to slow tracks to up to 1/4 of the original tempo without altering pitch or clarity.
As such, it’s a great practice tool for learning to play your favorite songs at a lower tempo — or transcribing the notes, if that’s what you’re into. This must-have practice app also offers transposing and looping options for any song in your iPhone’s library, and you can give it a try for free with Amazing Slow Downer Lite.
Amazing Slow Downer is actually a fully-functioning music player with the ability to load and store songs from your iOS device’s music library, but it adds basic EQ and playback options. Its straightforward, no-frills interface lets you adjust mix, pitch, speed and loop functions with simple slider bars.
It would be nice to have a BPM indicator as well, but that’s not a deal breaker. A loop function allows users to set start and end times via slider bars with adjustable precision, and you can save loops and load them later.
Though the Lite version allows for manipulation of the first 1/4 of a track, this app is worth paying the extra $15 for full functionality if you’re serious about learning or transcribing songs. Clarity, pitch preservation, and lack of excessive distortion set this app apart from the other track speed/pitch manipulation apps we’ve seen.
- Stereo pan
