with transferring music onto iTunes from your iPhone, you say it's easier if it's stored somewhere, but don't say what to do if it's not. Mines not, it was all stored on my own laptop and is now on my iPhone as the only storage of the songs. How do I transfer these or store them?

This is a fantastic, simple guide for transferring an iphone to a new itunes. I no longer have access to my old iTunes and like a lot of people here I spent ages deciding how best to go about this as I really didn't want to lose any of my data, but I am so glad I took the plunge and followed this guide as it worked perfectly. Honestly, I have spent literally days looking for a solution to this, and this is by far the simplest option (why Apple can't provide a simple guide like this I have no idea). Just for the record for a few people asking here, after doing the backup and the final sync I still had all my contacts, SMS messages, notes, calendar entries, photos and original songs that were already on there. I have an old iPhone 3G and it still all worked fine for it. The only thing this guide doesn't solve is transferring music from an iPhone to the new iTunes/computer, but that wasn't a big deal for me as I have most of it backed up anyway (like I say this transfer to a new iTunes doesn't actually erase the songs from your iPhone - as long as you don't check the box to sync your phone with the new (blank) iTunes library). Whilst I was doing my iPhone housekeeping I thought I would see if I could get the few songs that I don't have elsewhere, copied from my phone and onto my PC with 3rd party software. I used Wideangle's "Touchcopy" free demo, which was really simple and easy. It limits you to downloading a total of 100 songs, but this was fine for me and you can pay to get the full version if you need to copy more than that.

Phew! I can finally relax about this, now everything's copied over I am ready to go and upgrade to iPhone 5 (love it but is a phone really worth all this hassle?!). Anyway I hope that helps answer some of the other questions in this thread.

I'm totally stuck between steps 6 and 7. When I clicked apply, it said it was syncing everything, but when I went to my phone, nothing changed and I still can't add any music from my iTunes.

Move the music from your flash drive to your music folder. It will be easier for you later if the songs are already in folders (by artist or by album). Go to iTunes and click "File" then "Add folder to library. Add individual folders that you moved over or you can just click on the entire music folder (don't open it) and add that folder. iTunes will import your music. Next, click the "Advanced" tab and click "Get Album Artwork". iTunes will find any artwork it can.

iTunes "remembers" the location of your music so if you change the location, even if you move a song from your music folder to a new folder on your hard drive, it won't be able to find the song. You'll have to delete those songs with exclamation points by them from iTunes. Don't worry, you're really just deleting the "bookmark" of the songs' old locations.
Open iTunes. Click "File" and then "Add Folder to Library". Navigate to the folder you stored your music in. If you stored your songs in your "My Music" folder click the entire folder (don't open it). Select your folder and iTunes will import all of your music back in. If you are missing any album artwork click the "Advanced" tab then click "Get Album Artwork". iTunes will look for and supply any missing artwork that's available.
After that you can put your music back on your device. Depending on how you've set your sync up you may have to add or remove checkmarks by your songs to get the ones you want back on your device the next time you sync.
Hope that helps.
